Thread: Sony Vaio X backlight control problem in Ubuntu 11.04

i installed ubuntu 11.04 on friend's sony vaio x (the exact model number vpcx131kx). told me few issues has found, , haven't found solution them in forums. i'm going post each 1 separate thread here, in hopes of finding answer , perhaps helping future searchers same issue.

first issue backlight brightness cannot adjusted. apparently was able adjust when first bought , apparently had earlier version of ubuntu installed, did not see myself. taking word it.

backlight supposed controlled fn-f5 , fn-f6. using these key combinations causes indicator float in top right of screen, showing brightness supposedly being increased or decreased. reacts pressing key combinations, nothing changes in actual brightness.

make sense install earlier version, long 11.04 in beta, in hopes work? or can recommend solution?

so seems able post answer own question, or @ least work-around else has put together.

in general problem has been reported , elsewhere. here there bug report last year screen brightness functionality on sony vaio y. , within there patch francesco giudici solved problem vaio x. see post #7.

must mention record first thing tried roll version 10.10 , 9.10, because friend owns vaio told me when bought second hand, had earlier version of ubuntu installed, , did work. after installing these earlier versions, though, trying adjust screen brightness fn+f5 or fn+f6 still did not work.

patch linked above worked ubuntu 9.10. reinstalled 11.04 (technically upgrading 9.10 11.04). after upgrade patch no longer working, although before, indicator float in top right of screen, showing brightness supposedly being increased or decreased, responding fn+f5 , fn+f6 keys.

ran patch again , worked. repeat, patch intended vaio y works vaio x.
