Thread: nvidia nsanity

hi, first post, , of course, in desperation.

installing 11.04 on gigabyte e7aum-ds2h onboard geforce9400. i'm trying turn xbmc htpc. i'm not using xwindows or that. going straight console now.

i'm experiencing grub black/blank screen. i've read sticky, searched 2 days, looking community. know common problem, don't know else try...

1. i've changed kernel boot options, i.e. nomodeset
2. i've toggled grub_gfxmode=640x680 line
3. i've remembered grub-update
4. can grub menu using shift @ bootup, messing around settings , cli there
5. started default nvidia drivers (not good), , installed nvidia-current - works better.
6. @ blank screen, can hit alt-f1 console/tty fine.
7. if use nosplash --verbose, long wait blank screen, last bits of bootup log , login prompt.
8. , stuff i've forgotten i've done....

can't understand have xbmc installed , working beautifully. can set xbmc autorun no trouble @ all. it's period between bios , xbmc goes dark. when quit xbmc, blinking cursor, can f1 console. grub??? missing? why difficult? live it, not right, , want right.

have installed nvidia driver card?
terminal or alt + f2 tty (since seem comfortable using terminal post, , for learning use terminal btw!) this:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings mesa-utils sudo reboot

then after ubuntu reboots, run:

code:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

to configure nvidia driver.
write if need more help.
edit: saw have tried nvidia-current. have configured nvidia-current posted?
ubuntu run ok live cd? may problem xbmc , not ubuntu.
