instructional post - medium difficulty.
installing on older notebook (or other system) no external bootable device available:
solution went this:
- no cd/dvd drive
- no floppy
- no boot usb capability
- no (usable) os on hd
* - or other system; if desktop, i'd suggest (at least temporarily) installing cdrom drive instead.
- remove target hd notebook.*
- disconnect hd desktop.**
- use adapter cable set install target drive in desktop.***
- boot desktop ubuntu install cd or usb stick.
- install target hd.
- when install tells restart system, shut down (you may have manually).
- remove target hd desktop , re-install in notebook.
- boot notebook hd.
- enjoy ubuntu.
** - not necessary, little safer!
*** - pata (ide) adapter cable set work too. used usb adapter there's no obvious reason wouldn't work notebook or externally on desktop - make sure install onto right drive!
*** - opportunity backup on target drive ubuntu install erase/format drive.
two comments ...
first, if desktop in use has internal hard drive (and presume does), , "first" drive seen ubuntu installer, install grub drive -- not other drive. not overwrite whatever have setup on desktop drive, mean the other drive not boot when replaced laptop.
safer option not have other drive connected desktop when installing ubuntu. force grub installed drive.
second, when install desktop, installer sees hardware , install associated drivers. when put drive laptop, have different hardware. ubuntu have detect new hardware , load new drivers, instead.
while might not pose problem, not guaranteed work. so, not surprised if, after put drive laptop, 1 or more hardware devices not work.
also, if laptop using ati or nividia video hardware, have install restricted drivers after replacing drive laptop. same true of other restricted drivers -- example, wired or wireless networking.
