"allocated" space has been marked part of partition, such sda1.

"unallocated" space has reason been left un-marked, , un-formatted too. if there's lot of it, think how might recovered. if it's small part of disk (1% or less), forget it.

have elderly hd 250mb unallocated @ beginning, ever since started losing partition tables (which stored @ beginning of partition). told gparted start first partition 250mb disk surface, avoiding putting useful on part of disk.
