.htaccess questions - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

i'm not familiar working .htaccess files. have question regarding 1 site created. it's hosted rochen, i've never altered myself either except add mod_rewrite function according instructions found somewhere within joomla wiki.

my question this, in root folder, same folder contains public_html folder contains site files, there .htaccess file. then, if click on public_html folder, have within folder .htaccess file, .htaccess.original file, htaccess.txt file, , new_htaccess file without extension. know htaccess.txt original , use change .htaccess, that's know here.

which 1 of these main .htaccess file site, must 1 in root folder containing public_html folder, or .htaccess within public_html folder.

i need unblock public access /tmp in sites .htaccess file. i'm nervous know typo crash site .

any advice or know of online resources working .htaccess relates joomla?

hmm, well, .htaccess file in "public_html" folder 1 want edit make changes.

but... not advise making changes allow access "tmp" folder, or other joomla folders, can cause major security headaches.
