hi all. past several weeks, i've encountered problems every media player i've used: few minutes after starting application, entire system freezes, requiring power cycle going again.
first experienced problem rhythmbox, banshee , gtkpod. on guess problem gtk-based players, switched on amarok, remained stable. unfortunately, amarok's support ipod nano 3g tenuous, least, tried out clementine.
unfortunately, clementine has started crashing on startup. has sort of blown hypothesis gtk audio apps @ fault, kde-based ones immune. may related checking/updating music library, wasn't happening before yesterday - , had none of these problems before march or april.
i've tried searching forums , net @ large, haven't found description of same symptoms elsewhere, decided bite bullet , ask. i've attempted diagnose processes might causing problem running top in terminal window , waiting crash, either couldn't see pattern, or couldn't replicate crashes on purpose (you know watched pot . . .)
isn't happening totem, @ least can play media, long can find on filesystem.
system 1.8 ghz amd athlon xp 1 gb ram, running lucid 2.6.32-32 kernel , gnome. music library large - several thousand tracks, mp3, parts residing on 2 different hard drives.
i'm ubuntu user of few years (started in 2007/08 gutsy), newbie forums more technical aspects of managing linux install, have patience! i'll glad try , supply further details might helpful. i'm @ work , afflicted pc @ home, further tinkering have wait until tonight.
pardon bump, there can provide input on issue? helping hand in right direction, if not full solution?
judging system monitor, crash preceded cpu activity ramping few seconds before whole system locks up. however, doesn't appear system load particularly high - @ times, machine has had system load average of 25+ and, although unusable, settled down again.
unfortunately, running clementine or rhythmbox command line provided no helpful information either.
hints?
other information offer, via command-line tool or utility haven't considered?
known bugs in library shared media apps, cause sort of runaway process?
forum (or section on forum) better suited inquiries of type?
problem getting aggravating, , i'd resolve it, if possible, in way other reinstalling os or reverting windows . . .
many thanks!
