i have old packard bell imedia 5000-series , running ubuntu 11.04 (natty) on right now, quite slow, has 512mb of ddr-ram , looking distro . have looked @ opensuse , xubuntu, best this. has 2.66ghz p4, 512mb ddr, 196mb ati radeon, 2 dvd drives, 1 floppy drive, usb, integrated sound, integrated ethernet, winmodem (which have taken out, parallel port, rs232 serial port, , 240 volt power supply. needs have equivalents programs in ubuntu, not need installed standard. not fedora or linux mint, , kubuntu hungry on hardware.

scientific 6.0 stable os. flies on older pc have. mentioned not liking fedora, scientific polished , desktop ready rebrand of rhel; can't beat
