HLS streaming with .mov origin file.

i have collection of .mov files (iso media, apple quicktime movie).

i need stream them web application using rtmp flash supporting devices , hls ios devices using html5 video tag.

i have had no problems if convert files mp4 , use …/hls-vod/path-to-file.mp4.m3u8 no luck quicktime version.

i have tried renaming .mov file .f4v given this link suggests .mov , .f4v have same support.

my questions are:

are .mov files supported rtmp streaming?
do need transconde files mp4 (or other format) able stream videos apple devices?
if answer #2 "yes", there free software perform transcoding centos ec2 based system automagically? current option script calls ffmpeg.
