i beginner @ ubuntu using maverick 10. have problem when trying use terminal install. (as example wine installed, think not work not positive of success). tonight post question managed install firefox 4 instructions given @ sticky message , looked failed (would not take last command) firefox 4 there when opened browser. suppose don't know did other cut , paste code thread.
have wasted several hours trying, without success install sigil. have tried 3 versions suggested @ downloads page. last 1 tried sigil-0.4.0rc1-linux-setup.bin tried x64 vers first decided maybe not compatible.
if of use:
followed directions given at:
http://web.sigil.googlecode.com/hg/intro.html#linux
, checked box make file executable. tried rest...
tried both copy/paste , directly typing in commands. this, no matter version:
:~$ chmod +x sigil-0.4.0rc1-linux-x64-setup.bin
chmod: cannot access `sigil-0.4.0rc1-linux-x64-setup.bin': no such file or directory
:~$
must missing new ubuntu know what. have tried open file autorun , archive manager - fail.
past additions made basic ubuntu install except (nonworking?) wine have been through ubuntu software center. sigil not listed there, nor other ebook editor/creator can find.
typed in:
uname -m
i686
thought information might help.
come ubuntu using apple g4 80% of time , windows xp 20%. have taught basic computer use , internet classes other adults. don't think used apple os command line more twice in 10 years , used programs working when downloaded. fault not learning more.
must missing basic, beginner see it. need edit several files ebooks, can me program installed? (i rather have working right wine - don't have have wine. need ebook editor).
using home built computer dual boot (i still need windows gaming (which why wanted wine above). ubuntu 10.10 works fine, gimp , openoffice.
please?
chmod +x same thing right clicking on file , going properties make executable, if you've done don't need chmod it.
suspect reason having problems terminal command hadn't navigated folder install file in cd. e.g. if downloaded file downloads file, have type
to downloads folder, run chmod command.code:cd downloads
if can folder file in using terminal, can run install command:
a way check it's working type 'sudo ./' part, start typing first part of installer's filename, press tab. if you're in right folder, terminal should fill in rest of filename you.code:sudo ./installer.bin
