purchased desktop system online without os intention of putting on either ubuntu or kubuntu. i've d-loaded , burned live cd's of 10.4 lts , 11.04 both , 9.10 in kubuntu. winmd5sum's matched fine.

whenever try install, system locks after choose time zones(black screen, showing locked-up mouse pointer) though once managed user info screen. if try without installing, seem have intermittent luck. run awhile before lock , lock before completing live, non-install, setup.

barebones amd cpu (windows 7 ready)
w/ athlon ii x3 435 (3 x 2.9ghz - 1.5mb cache)
asus m4a78lt-m
8gb ddr3-1333 pc3-10600 (2 x 4gb dual channel)
500gb sata2 - 3gb/sec 7200rpm (16mb cache) hard drive

kubuntu 10.4 lts live-cd seems farthest along before run trouble, given choice, traditional ubuntu more. trying both see os more intuitive.

experience ubuntu limited version 8 , using live cd's on ancient systems. have little knowledge , understanding of cli , once have copied sudo.

if md5s okay may want check disc integrity. there's option in list has 'try blah' & 'install blah' & like.

try usb install rather cd. i'd recommend unetbootin that.
