Thread: choice of a filesystem for an external hdd

hi,

bought new external hdd. came fat32 file system or that. format using more modern file system. prefer, if possible, avoid ntfs option @ risk of not being able connect external hdd windows boxes. consider ntfs though if proven more reliable , secure linux alternatives. question is: reliable , secure (against file corruption or file loss) file system external hdd? or @ least top options. able secure data on hdd encrypting whole hdd - may issue.

best regards,

i decided try ext4 file system , guess what: 70 gb storage space lost. give more details: 15 gb not seen (instead of reporting 931 gb reports 916 gb) while rest reported occupied (although hdd newly formatted).

tried xfs didn't work: weird errors thrown. ntfs works expected (931 gb found , reported) - when removing hdd through "safely remove drive" option error thrown (i found here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...+to+stop+drive appears ubuntu bug). idea appreciated.
