Thread: Scared to install all the compiz items!

i got upgraded 11.04 , absolutely beautiful , crystal clear. first time, can see monitor, fonts... can zoom down pixel , still looks good...

know uses (some) compiz libraries or whatever call it. update manager (set end user , check proposed once week manually) brought compiz-everything pretty much. here's gets scarey me....

have been virtually married ubuntu, , direct rendering works..with ati 4850hd... read everywhere compiz turns off direct rendering , have bunch of uninstall commands...(meant fix but) completly disables system everytime, stuck shabby, nasty looking crap monitor (after hours of yelling , screaming) , not basic gnome program run without seemingly endless loop of errors , system lockups (yet nightly firefox flawless)...

real question (i ramble, wanted specific).
@ within remote possibility keep compiz effects , animations (because it's beautiful) , keep direct rendering 100% of time without errors runs? ...or...find out compiz effects/settings disable direct rendering can avoid them?

i couldn't tell compiz settings mess around display, can suggest making backup image of hard drive using clonezilla, installing compiz , turning on settings 1 @ time see (if any) produce negative results, turning off (the negative ones) , moving on next setting. if stuck , can't figure out how return "perfect" setup, restore hard drive image made clonezilla , way was, pre-compiz settings if nothing ever happened.
