my roommate has ubuntu on notebook not connect our router (d-link dsl-684gt) yesterday. switched on , off , gave him static ip address in ubuntu's connection settings , worked fine again. after that, pc (windows) not use connection fixed after turning off dhcp , giving me static ip well. today, network on ubuntu machine did not work again while mine continued fine. things tried ubuntu machine work. behaviour time follows:
ubuntu said "network connection [was]established", did not manage connect anywhere. dns not work, nor pinging our router , reaching web interface (using ip address) , of course not show in samba on other machine. things tried unsuccessfully working:
- switching dhcp/static ip again
 - turning router off , on
 - trying different rj45 cable
 - connecting 2 more routers. still not reach other ones' web interfaces
 - resetting router factory settings
 - try , decent connection on fresh ubuntu os (live cd of 9.04)
