How to stop the Selection Tool from selecting effects around objects?

this question illustrator cs5.

i can't seem figure out how fix problem. vaguely recall finding solution in cs4, cannot recall how achieved:

scenario: if have number of shapes on top of each other, with, example, drop shadow on top shape, whenever try , select shape below (it peeking out beneath top shape, click on 'peeking' section of shape try , select it) cannot - selects top shape top shape's drop shadow 'blocking' shape below it. make sense?

how go about remedying this? seem recall being able tell illustrator ignore 'effects' when making selections in cs4, cannot work out how in cs5. , there way refine 'sensitivity' or selection radius when clicking make selections?

hopefully knowledge can please advise?

many thanks.

never heard of ignore effscts this.

couple way solve this

  1. cmd click on selected top element, select element underneath.
  2. you may have used visiblilty eyeball in appearance pallette temporarily hide drop shadow
  3. you can use cmd 3 hide selected top elements, make change need, opt cmd 3 unhide

for #1 work, don't click fast, or else clicks register double click rather 2nd clikc (depending on have set in keyboard preferences).

i mention #3 cause useful tool cleaning , grouping complex documents, when want select multiple elements.
