warping text to shape?

okay please bear me: don't use illustrator lot.  i'm trying create simple logo want add letters "hai" hard-hat image.  i'll paste in screenshot below can see i'm talking about.  can tell me how warp 3 letters fit shape?  looks they're on hat?  i'm experimenting arc , free transform not getting anywhere.  suggestions?

here's 1 way. set text area-text using center justification. selected go object>envelope distore>make mesh using 1 row/1column. direct select tool, select anchor point , play around handles this
