Thread: Samba/Winbind and Windows XP/Vista/7

a little background:

ubuntu (11.04) server
multiple windows pcs (xp/vista)
access terminal on server through putty
webmin installed , functioning properly
samba/winbind installed
gnome-core installed , accessed through vncviewer

server box used home file server, , functional except windows/samba/winbind compatability error.

ok, have been trying use other posts , still unable solve issue last couple weeks, no avail.

when server not connected network, windows boxes visible in network, when linux box added (powered on), server accessible short period of time, , allows read/write. then, after few minutes, of boxes disappear, network map empty, except windows media share. know linux box causing conflict have been unable determine how remedy issue.

also, strangely, can access server through shortcut created on desktop, , still functions correctly (allows read/write).

no means linux pro, have been working toward better understanding, extremely familiar windows environment, want transition linux primary os.

on matter appreciated.
