Thread: Meerkat Ion Freezes?

my almost-two-year-old meerkat ion nettop has developed habit of "freezing" (though use word trepidation think might heat related). started happening yesterday, though suspect might have happened in past.

symptom hard miss: catatonic computer. keyboard , mouse non-responsive (yes, tried switching virtual consoles 1-6 , usual three-finger salutes ctrl-alt-backspace, ctrl-alt-delete), screen frozen clock indicating time occured, can't ssh in system, no ping responses. nothing obsious in logs around time of crashes either. cure 4-second-power-button-press.

noticed system very hot after these incidents, got sensors going sensors command worked.

on bootup, 2 cores pleasant 23°c or so. started rsync job critical content system, , watched temperatures climb steadily job progressed. got 77°c @ 1 point, bit unnerving given "critical" temp indicated in sensors output. settled down after rsync done to:

code:
coretemp-isa-0000 adapter: isa adapter core 0: +71.0°c (crit = +90.0°c) coretemp-isa-0001 adapter: isa adapter core 1: +72.0°c (crit = +90.0°c)
which way hotter (dell) laptop.

meerkat model got has no fans, giant heat sinks on processors. several months ago upgraded ubuntu 10.04 release came no longer getting updates. i'm wondering perhaps missed setting or module tweak prevent thing overheating during update. box had no problems dealing heat in summer of 2010 (and have a/c year it's not particularly hot in here).

if of rings bell others here, linux geek sure appreciate heads up. things i'm looking include:

  • cpu frequency scaling options
  • acpi settings
  • module changes (already have coretemp, lm90)
  • bios tweaks

, else might help.

some additional information. after advice system 76 staffer (thanks!) powered down box, took outside, opened , had @ air compressor. lots of dust. putting in 1 piece, , firing seemed show slight improvement in temperature typically ran.

after this, put in cron job dump of output of sensors command syslog (via logger) every 5 minutes, idea of how hot processors are. plotting shows nice asymptotic curve first few hours system turned on. system starts @ ambient temp (mid 20's centigrade) , likes cruise around 70-80 degrees centigrade, kernel thinks critical temperature 90. serious computational load, or if room gets little warm (it air conditioned) , gets close (mid 80's):

in last few days see couple of times there several warnings such as:

code:
aug 3 19:32:25 blackwolf kernel: [99228.287181] cpu1: temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 24008)
followed by:

code:
aug 3 19:32:25 blackwolf kernel: [99228.288131] cpu1: temperature/speed normal
as far know, not happening right after cleaned it. , write, it's down 78 degrees again. what's weird throttling events occured while nobody actively using system, screen saver (and have in turn toned down: it's f-spot favourites one, pauses 15 seconds between images, not default 2-3 seconds).

think i'm going have @ adding fan thang
