Thread: "Safely Remove" usb hdd via CLI

hi,

i've got couple external hard drives on ubuntu server 10.04.2 box. 1 of them, seagate freeagent 2tb, powers down after it's unplugged usb port. other one, seagate goflex desk 3tb, stays spinning , doesn't power down if it's unplugged usb port.

2tb drive usb 2.0, while 3tb drive usb 3.0, don't know if makes difference.

i'm looking way "safely remove" device powers down , platters stop spinning before unplug it.

did find thread on debian forums looking same thing, i'm not quite sure how tell usb port drive hooked (since it's using add-on usb 3.0 card). not sure command used either.

thanks!

try unmount command.
