How to make a clipping mask in this particular case?

okay, begin know how make clipping mask, case i'm going present right can't figure out mistake doing (if any). beginner.

in link above tutorial on how make medieval scrol i'm stuck @ step 25 , glad helped.

as said in step 25 expand appearance of scroll , select 2 clip mask. in th above picture have selected scroll show how looks.

 

now can see in image below have expanded appearance of paper scroll. selected paper scrol , yellowish green grunge background placed below it. , moment hit ctrl+7 (in windows) or command+7 (in mac) make clipping mask error showed has been highlighted.

 

one more thing, have clipped masks before in same tutorial given above don't know has gone wrong me in step.

please help.

why want clipping mask? don’t see reason it.

 

however, want use pathfinder panel combine paths 1 shape. first use ungroup , release compound commands few times each, make sure have nothing grouped. press top left button in pathfinder p[panel. should produce 1 closed path surrounds scroll.
