i believe setup usb device filter in virtualbox on mac forward particular devices of choosing, such hard drive, ubuntu via virtual usb controller. ubuntu see mounting other hard drive. don't use feature, and, @ least in past, part of binary distribution of virtualbox, not open source one, need make sure that's have on mac.

here's portion of virtualbox manual pertains device filter:
http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html#idp11145776

sister uses device filters mac host, know it's not bad configure. if have difficult approach, i'd try asking on http://forums.virtualbox.org/ rather here.
