okay, arm track, select clip, turn down little audio track arrow , try add keyframe.

it sounds you're doing right thing, let's try make little clearer:
1) drag , drop clip audio timeline
2) twirl open audio track header
3) move current time indicator on clip, wherever want first keyframe be
4) press 'add-remove keyframe' button
did work? zoomed level can see part of clip decent detail?
