.htaccess: Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps misspell - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

i'm pretty new server configuration please bear me.

i have signed linode vps impressed speeds.

i have set server , have uploaded site server , able login , use administrator panel no problem @ all.

however, when go view frontend of site get:

http error 500 (internal server error): unexpected condition encountered while server attempting fulfil request

when check out log comes with:

.htaccess: invalid command 'rewriteengine', perhaps misspelled or defined module not included in server configuration

i have enabled mod_rewrite in apache , have checked it's enabled many times , is. have disabled site , enabled , restarted again , it's not working @ all.

on server running:

nothing seems work. have missed out?? it's driving me wall!

run forum post assistant , report gets. suspect apache rewrite module not installed or configured.

check configs again in httpd.conf, check module there, though think if wasnt have issue starting apache too...
