printer appears not driven properly
switched mac ubuntu 11.04. working fine, subject problem, described in detail below. see updates @ end of msg.
can following instructions, don't know enough "run root" type of instruction - please describe necessary terminal or menu steps. have checked similar threads on site - none of advice worked; n/a.
system specifics:
toshiba a665 s2100x laptop (i7 core)
ubuntu 11.04 updated weekly
hplip removed, reinstalled & updated
hp 845c via usb; connected, works win 7 dual-boot , separate powerbook when plugged it. plenty of ink.
seen hplip hp 845c
cups de- , reinstalled; error stated below seems cups related (service not available) balks on docs.
problem specifics:
hp 845c printer printed ok, noticed graphic files, e.g. maps, printed very, faintly. use black ink cartridge , has printed ok before.
used printing/setup under system/prefs set grayscale. no improvement.
started printing text files gedit.
won't print these:
rtfs libre office
jpgs or gifs image handling pgm.
pdfs firefox w/plugin, image viewer or acrobat
set "normal color" ; no change:

i've tried removing , reinstalling printer, hplip, hjif (?) via synaptic option.
no change in effect, have little blue hp logo on top panel. wowie!
can me?

switched usb cable hub 1 of laptop's usb ports. no difference.
email in evolution printed immediately! still can't print pdfs or uses hplip/cups.

might've fixed it:
laptop dual-boot; booted win7 , printer worked, after told it download right driver. so...
1. booted ubuntu
2. selected system/admin/printing
3. deleted "new group" , hp 845c there used hplip
4. created new hp 845c printer used usb instead of hplip
(note: ended doing 4x, since doesn't show created printer - thought i'd messed up
when did show on re-selecting "printing," deleted ones)
5. printed test page - worked fine! printed pdf , web page - fine!
6. changed printer attributes "normal grey scale" due not using color inks - ehhhhh! stopped working
printer works on either "normal color" (with bad rendition of colors)
or on "draft grey scale" fine except photos.
summary: combination of eschewing hplip usb , not selecting "normal grey scale"
made work.
so, of more "usual nerds" ignored plight.
