Thread: Any recommendations for: Ubuntu Server + NAS + GUI?

i've awakened dark-side of force , converted ubuntu (thank you).

configuration guys recommend setting , running general nas using latest version of ubuntu server? have older xeon poweredge server , provision general, basic file/storage server.

goal 'green' fast possible , continue on work , focus on productivity job , family. presently, not have nice block of time i'd love dedicate learning cli in depth , full confidence before deploying server. not laziness necessity me.

server (private/soho) lan no connection whatsoever cloud (either directly or indirectly). taking advantage of disk array on server , using both raid 0 , 1. also, love use system in 'headless' config , remote access via windows , ubuntu workstation. suggestions along these lines appreciated!

i'd ubuntu server config 'lightweight' , simple execute possible. again, simple dedicated storage system , not mail, dns, firewall etc. server appliance.

, although know not typically recommended (for security purposes) i'd possibly use gui visual person. new ubuntu (a windows convert) , learning cli on other versions of ubuntu. in meantime i'd server , running kicking files , forth windows , ubuntu workstation fast possible. without having crash course serious depths of cli @ time.

given preference gui, know many of recommend installing desktop version of ubuntu purpose. however, before go down path thought i'd see guys had advantages of using alternative configuration using ubuntu server edition.

thoughts?

your situation sounds similar enough mine. have old server running 9.10 desktop (which new needs rebuilding since 9 no longer getting updates). chose desktop version because operations simpler using gui , there no other setup required way. recommend using 10.04 since it's lts release (5 years of updates opposed 2 years).

server configured sign @ console. can use rsync through ssh move files onto machine. can log machine machine on network (virtual or otherwise) using ssh , make changes enough (moving files or running backup script instance).

ubuntu (or unix-like operating system) terminal need access server. windows use cygwin allows me run bash in windows command line.

server connected regular network connected internet in way, have connected own router can have dedicated wireless network serving flac files hi-fi system (any machine connected wi-fi connection has no internet access though intend setup server proxy server give hi-fi machine inernet access through server).

server has 4 1.5 tb drives (two mirrored backups). chose not use raid setup. can read backups here:

write article on moving files using rsync. let me know if should bump on priority list.

hope helps.
