using ubuntu 10 (i believe) in virtual box on vista box. reason because compile android sources , kernels hobby of mine.
want install ubuntu primary operating system there things still use in windows , not sure if ubuntu can sufficiently replace in windows. to.
uses on vista box follows:
- media server: stream music , movies ps3 , vista laptop
- music editing: use fruity loops studio music creation, goldwave audio editing , conversion, mp3tag media tag editing, , of music files wma
- movies: copy dvd movies either onto dvds or convert them wmv/avi/divx etc. , store them on hard drive streaming
- school: taking college courses online , courses work internet explorer. firefox isn't supported, go figure. rely heavily on msoffice assignments , had pay software.
- internet: browse net kinds of sites , forums. assuming google chrome or firefox sufficient task don't know if need insure have internet connection.
- security: use windows firewall , microsoft security essentials. have had luck setup whereas computer has not had random shutdowns/reboots, blue error screens etc. don't know kind of security need ubuntu far viruses, attacks, etc.
- remote access: have vista box setup allow remote desktop connection when away home. ubuntu/linux offer this?
apologize such long post , sure forgetting something. want see if can replace windows environment linux/ubuntu , keep functionality of windows environment. no longer want use virtual machines or if have to, want keep use of virtual machines minimum.
possible me do? hoping much? thank solid response 1 can give in helping me find right path migrate on linux/ubuntu.

are assignments you're doing incompatible libreoffice? assignments pretty basic word documents. send email college compatibility firefox, not being compatible browsers beyond ie shocking, can't believe it's still happening in 2011.posted organizedkaos

ubuntu has no services listening default, firewall kind of useless, have few can install though, there's limited malware available ubuntu, since install majority of software ubuntu software centre, getting malware difficult. it's 1 of major insecurities in using windows, you're expected software random binaries on internet.- security: use windows firewall , microsoft security essentials. have had luck setup whereas computer has not had random shutdowns/reboots, blue error screens etc. don't know kind of security need ubuntu far viruses, attacks, etc.
