okay...i new here. upgraded old pc can't manage windows 3 weeks ago. discovered wasn't going able access other 2 without having ubuntu network them. current desktop (a monster machine day 1!) next fresh, dual boot install natty, win 7 home prem 64 bit. enjoying ubuntu on windows did dual boot on dell inspiron 1012. still trying set up.
when did 2nd install samba appears. in file manager - super user mode have network listed under places. shows suzanna-dell, suzanna-gateway , windows network. (those 2 powered on now. third ubuntu , suzanna-desktop). can access couple of files on s-g easily. (i'm on dell now) need copy 1 onto dell. prefer gnome commander when i'm moving copying files because dual panel. there go smb fails browse network , asks if smb installed. well, no.....
tried install smb on sg yesterday using win* command sorry memory bit sketchy. went fine while started showing lot of file not find critical fail etc....kept going little concerned , had multiple appointments shut down. booted fine today haven't looked @ since shut down yesterday.
have usb (hp officejet) printer won't function wireless or network printer can shared through either of windows capable pcs. have kvg switch can use hook both same keyboard/mouse, monitor & printer if choose, prefer network share.
okay...so questions:
1) samba better option me? had suggested using ssh instead, i've never liked ad hoc in windows , seems pretty same. 1 plus ssh i've seen use mouse &/or keyboard on of machines.
2) how install samba? how of mess have forward on monster? lol
3) in samba....how identify suzanna-desktop has no windows installed?
4) plan add external network hd eventually. go of dsl router i'm assuming. samba accommodate that?
5) bare minimum need able access other network pcs in gnome commander? or there better option me doing copying, renaming, file organizing locally , across mini network?)
6)i'd plan on making monster "server" or base pc, although i've made more progress in getting dell (netbook) set effectively. how big deal 1 choose? if ever can afford new pc gateway first 1 out....i hate thing!
thank insight, suggestions. today bill pay day...so i'll distracted, process easier if start accessing @ least these 2 pcs system set record keeping while i'm working.
