Development site configuration file - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

i have created development site work on upgrades. development site running, however, noticed configuration file has same database info , directory paths live site.

in creating development site, created new database called "clonesite" when add name database name on config file of dev site,the site shows db error. clone site display correctly when configuration file has same database information in live site?
this doesn't seem right me.what right thing here?

is database exact copy of production/live database? if not, have export contents of live database , import database clonesite. also, have defined username access new database. if not have create one. username accesses new database has have privileges granted it.
