Thread: HOWTO enable custom super bindings under unity

this post provides workaround issue of unity stealing super key modifier , hence preventing custom keybindings use modifier.

under default settings unity seems pressing super key can used unity related tasks. can problematic if user keep unity, but,

  • user change/disable default maps <super>+s, <super>+a, <super>+f, in unity used particular tasks. unity not provide setting change these bindings, should file bug it.

  • in general, user map <super>+key custom command, such super+l = lock screen, super+n = negative, or super+scroll = zoom desktop.

problem default settings that, <super> pressed, action taken pass focus unity's interface, , subsequent key presses muted. disables super modifier key in cases.

possible workaround involves changing default key bring unity's interface.

  1. go ccsm
  2. unity, behaviour
  3. change "key show launcher" <super>+anothermodifier (or other sequence of modifier kes)
  4. press or exit ccsm apply changes

  • note, in order continue able use unity's useful <super>+[0-9] feature, "anothermodifier" must modifier key, such alt, shift or control.
  • i recommend <super>+<alt> since close super key , both can pressed thumb
  • if want <super>+n "toogle screen negative" , <super>+mousescroll zoom utilities back, re enable "negative" , "zoom desktop" ccsm. should work.

now, previous "unity commands" accessible via <super>+[0-9asf] accessible via <super>+anothermodifier+[0-9asf]. frees <super>+nonmodifier custom action/command.

have been frustrated while, , there have been numerous bugs filed this, hope helps someone.

helped me, thanks! find unity launcher agonizingly slow sometimes, whereas gnome-do super-quick! wanted keep <super><space> gnome-do launcher, , can. gnome-do, unity-don't.

of course revert ubuntu classic...
