i trying recreate "dark side" logo star wars: old republic fun side project, have run problems. dont use lighting effects in line of work, has become bit of learning experience me! started out creating shape pen tool , crafted procise possible. tried give outter glow? thought simple right? on forums asking help. 
this far have gotten.

the original simpyl based on different blur algorithm degenerate less gaussain blur and/or, since seems pixel-based in first place, has dilation built in compensate. likewise, may multiple smaller blurs different settings stacked. if must in ai, try duplicate shape, offset path outward gain "flesh" blur operation, tweak it. can done using pertinent functions in teh object --> path menu.
