Ungroup not available after Pathfinder/Divide = ??

hello:                                                                                                      level: new newbie  os: windows 7 home 64bit

 

 

the idea:

 

draw triangle > remove middle anchors > extend top anchor shape becomes of needle of compass

 

draw line down center > use align tool

 

now, here having trouble:

 

open pathfinder > (to split needle in 1/2) > ungroup resultant shape > fill left 1 color fill right other

 

so, how 1 ought able ungroup doesn't seem have been grouped in first place? divide under pathfinder doesn't appear generate (new) "resultant" shape /nor seem generate 1 object of line & triangle.

 

on note ... went ahead , grouped line w/the extended triangle , followed rest ... nope ... still ungroup not available after divide action

 

i looked under object option replace divide didn't have luck ... @ least mere logic had avaiable me

it seems object > path ought have useful tool need ... oh

 

i wondering if need go doing divide @ all. think put line in center of triangle , group them , fill right side w/one color , left w/an other? or idea of divide allow dual coloring w/in 1 object?

 

sorry if asking obvious. trying learn.

 

btw there online manual (for newbies)?

you're thinking complicated. draw 1 tall triangle form 1 half of needle. mirror around centre of become needle , duplicate while mirroring. apply color , group.
