some results of layer via copy (cmd+j) when pixel layers targeted seem unusual me. depending on initial conditions, result can entire layers being duplicated instead of selection, masks not being duplicated, , selection being lost plus select > reselect being unavailable. it's not difficult devise workarounds think may amiss.
the following table shows expected , actual results cs6 on os x 10.6.8. results find strange in red triple caps.
maybe misunderstand you, if appologize.
layer via copy means copy selected portion of image , paste new layer. if selection not used, assume entire image selected. , features of layer ignored.
the reason latter copying image, not layer , pasting new layer.
to copy , paste layers, select layer , right click on layer , select duplicate layer. or hold down alt key , drag layer new location. in both of these cases, layers mask , styles copied.
as selection, treated own entity. can use select menu effect happens it, including saving selection channel, right clicking on channel allow duplicate it, if needed, btw.
