due work haven't booted ubuntu in ages. job wrapped up, decided bounce linux.... grub comes same normal , let go while go , coffee. on screen when come black screen unblinking cursor. gave 5 min in case doing nothing past went on. no hdd activity had hit power button. time watched it. splash screen flashes on , disappears, comes cursor. there flicker line of text quick read , cursor. 3 times in 20 seconds , sits there. tried 1 of older version kernels don't work either. xp (obviously) boots fine. can't check i'm pretty sure v10.04 lts installed. recovery seems work ok not having done in there don't know or doing. leaves me dos looking menu update grub, clean space etc , defaults boot normally. selecting presents login/password , leaves me in console screen.
in time since last bootup have swapped out ancient nvidia 8600 gtx460. have non start? in windows still uses same driver old card i'm unsure if effect it. rearranged usb devices when plugging them in other same machine has run top.
ideas on start looking?
fresh install?
